As a mom of two boys, I've had two very different parenting experiences.

My elder son was born during COVID, so he missed out on preschool because everything was closed. We tried our best to keep him engaged at home, but it just wasn't the same. A couple of years later, when my younger son started at a Montessori preschool in Delhi NCR, I finally understood the real benefits of preschool.

The difference has been beautiful to watch.

Learning Happens in the Little Moments

Almost every day, he comes home with something new. One day it's a rhyme, another day it's an action song, and yesterday he surprised all of us by confidently singing the names of all the continents! I just looked at him and thought, "When did you learn all this?"

Those little moments make me smile because I know he's learning while having fun.

These experiences reflect what early childhood experts have long emphasised. According to UNESCO, the years from birth to the age of eight are the most critical for brain development, making quality early childhood education an important foundation for children's cognitive, social, emotional, and language development.

I've also seen him become more independent. He loves carrying his school bag, enjoys following a routine, happily shares stories about his friends and teachers, and is much more confident talking to people.

These changes may seem small, but as a parent, they are some of the biggest milestones. They show that preschool is helping children develop life skills alongside academic readiness.

Every Child's Journey Is Different

I'm not comparing my two children; every child is different. But I do feel my younger one has benefited from experiences that my elder son unfortunately missed during the pandemic.

Looking back, I realise that preschool offers much more than structured learning. It gives children opportunities to interact with peers, communicate, explore new ideas, and gradually become confident individuals.

Looking Beyond Academics When Choosing a Preschool

If you're thinking about Montessori school admission, my only suggestion is to look beyond academics.

Preschool isn't just about ABCs and numbers. It's where children learn confidence, curiosity, friendships, routines, and the joy of learning. These early experiences lay the foundation for skills they'll carry throughout their lives.

Whether it's through hands-on learning, meaningful interactions, or everyday discoveries, the right preschool helps children grow into independent and enthusiastic learners.
